If you’ve been following along on Instagram, then you know that I’ve been busy adding lots of character to our new home, and the kitchen is no exception. I would like to upgrade a few things in our kitchen (mainly the countertops) but I’m not in a big hurry because this will be a home that we plan to spend many, many years in. Great homes take time, right? Anyway, with that being said, I’ve compiled a list of quick, easy and cheap ways to bring a little warmth and personality to your kitchen.
So here we go…
I know, I know, you’ve probably heard this a million times but paint really can change the look and feel of an entire room without putting a major strain on your wallet. If you have a kitchen island think about painting it a fun color like I did in our kitchen. I used Posy by Sherwin Williams to add a touch of peach to our otherwise all white and gray kitchen. Then I took it a step further by adding this faux brick peel and stick wallpaper to the inlet. Now the island is such a warm, pretty focal point.
Upgrade your lighting
So, this is true for any room… upgrading your light fixtures will instantly elevate the style, look and feel of your space!
In our kitchen I swapped out the tiny builder grade light in our eating nook for this oversized midcentury modern style chandelier. Over the island we had can lights but I found this amazing company, Worth Home, who specialize in pendant light conversion kits! They sent these beautiful clear globe pendant lights along with the conversion kit and within minutes our can lights were totally transformed! Also, Brilliant Evolution provided battery operated undermount cabinet lighting. I just secured it under my cabinets with the adhesive tape provided and instantly had a more custom looking kitchen.
Change out your cabinet hardware
There are so many pretty options when it comes to cabinet pulls nowadays, so take advantage of it. Think of it as jewelry for your kitchen! I swapped out my basic silver knobs for these modern brass pulls and these T knobs and I absolutely love them.
Don’t forget to decorate!
This might seem like a ridiculous tip but so many people forget to actually decorate their kitchens. Of course it’s a space that needs to be practical and useful but it also doesn’t have to look like the inside of a hospital breakroom. In between all the necessary appliances be sure to make room for some pretty things too. Add a few vignettes of plants, candles and special mementos that make you smile. Add an unexpected lamp and a stack of books. Try adding family photos to break up the monotony of your kitchen backsplash. And, don’t forget to add art to your walls and rugs to your floors. Basically think of your kitchen just as you would any other room in your home and decorate accordingly. All these things will really help to add character and coziness to your kitchen. I promise. ❤
